I want to travel western europe extensively (at least 10 diff countries). Unfortunately I turned 26 last month and the price of the adult global eurail pass is too expensive. Wondering what some of the alternatives might be? If i was travelling on bus between 10-15 cities over 2-3 months, how much would I likely spend? more than a eurail pass?
I'm probably willing to hitch-hike to cut down costs, is ride share a common and reliable source of transport in europe?

Sure you can choose to hitch hike. In most of Europe it should not be too hard. There are also some websites on which people of offer rides.
An other alternative (you already wrote down) would be to use busses. (check eurolines). it depends a bit on the countries you want to visit, but in a country like Spain, you will find a massive number of buslines.
Another alternative is to check the websites of the train companies, and check for bargains. The trainpasses are not always worthwhile. Sometimes p-2-p, bought in advance are the cheaper option. In combination with some cheap flights you can end up cheaper than a trainpass.
