Going on a backpacking trip overseas in a couple of months and need some way to stay in touch with family/friends back home in the US. Any suggestions? Prefer to use text messaging so any known cheap text messaging services would be helpful! thanks!!!

Have you heard much about Chime? You get a US phone number to text from your mobile or computer. Its free, for now atleast, and you can text to friends in the US without racking up international charges cuz your using a US phone number. You sign up at www.chimenow.com/int and they set up your account for you. Hope that helps

ally883,
When you return from your trip, be sure to let us know what kind of experience you had with Chime.
I recently returned from an extended trip to Europe and used one of the "travel SIM" firms. They provided a SIM based on one of the U.K. networks and the service worked well for both voice and text. I'm still compiling my costs, but my initial impression is that it was a very cost effective method (as opposed to roaming with my home cell network).
Happy travels!

Skype is also another really great option. If you have a laptop and webcam, it's pretty much free video conferencing wherever in the world. I use it a lot - even in replacement of a phone when I'm back home! Have fun and be safe!
