I am starting to plan a trip in 2011. I will be 47, but taking my 16 year old son as his birthday present. He wants to go to Venice, so we may get a night train, or fly their to begin. Having done a similar trip two years ago with my eldest son (Prague, Berlin, Brusells, Paris), I would like to go to different cities. Would prefer to keep out of Italy as I imagine it will be expensive.............if not then Rome, Florence are options. What other routes, options are there?? Maybe Vienna, Munich? But really looking for some inspiration......happy to use night trains so distance not too much of an issue

Sounds like a great trip!
If you did Venice - Munich - Vienna, those are easy train rides, although I'm not sure I'd do them as night trains. For example, on the high-speed train, Munich-Vienna is only 4 hours.
If you did Venice - Munich by train, you could stop 90 minutes in and visit Verona for the day (check on luggage storage), and then I think it's another 4.5 hours to Munich.
Vienna and Munich are relatively reasonable in price. Venice can be relatively reasonable if you know what to watch out for. For example, vaporetto rides are expensive purchased singly, but not bad with a pass. Restaurant food can be expensive and bad, so use supermarkets and research places to eat ahead of time. Etc.

Concerning Rome, I was there last summer and didn't find it expensive at all. We stayed in a B&B for about 40euros (20 each), and ate great for at most 15euros per meal. If it's somehow on your way, I definitely recommend you check it out.
