I am leaving for Europe from Boston (in 5 days ;D ;D) I fly to Munich overnight landing on the 4th. It is the last day of oktoberfest, so I will be skipping town immeadiately. I plan on going to Bruges, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, and Vienna (with some small town excursions included). Any tips, recs, or advice would be great! My rail pass also includes France, Denmark, and Sweden. Are there areas I should skip to go to one of these countries? Very new to the solo backpack travel, so would appreciate any commentary! Cheers! -Connor

Connor,
I have a few comments on your questions. Although you're leaving in a few days, I'd highly recommend pre-reading the Guidebook Europe Through The Back Door if possible (or at least a few of the chapters). You should be able to find this in your local Library or book stores. That's an excellent book for learning how to travel in Europe, but not a book that is usually taken on trips.
The destinations you've chosen are all great places to visit. However, with only 18 days ("with some small town excursions included"), I'm not sure you'll have time for visiting any other places (your time frame allows about 3.5 days in each location, and it's extremely important to also allow for travel times between cities). I seriously doubt that you'll have time especially for Denmark and Sweden as they're somewhat distant from your other locations (and they're also VERY expensive places to visit). You'll likely be transiting Paris on your way to Bruges, so spending at least a day there might be worthwhile?
Will you be packing along any Guidebooks for each of the cities you'll be visiting? I find that packing along a few books is really a good idea (despite the weight), as they're an excellent source of reference during trips.
Hopefully the others will have a few suggestions as well. Happy travels!

Eagle, thank you so much for your quick response and advice. I am going to go buy RS through the back door today after work and brush up on it before I leave. I am also going to be cutting denmark and sweden out of my trip, because, as you pointed out they are out of the way and very expensive to visit. I am going to stick to my 5 major destinations (Amsterdam, Bruges, Berlin, Vienna, Munich) allowing myself more time to enjoy the cities, sights, and most importantly food.
I have already purchased a guidebook on Germany, since it is where I am flying in and out of, and because I am visiting both Munich and Berlin. I have been relying heavily on tripadvisor.com for tips and places to see while in my other locations (Vienna, Amsterdam, Bruge).
Thanks again Eagle!
