I was wondering, if we're staying in huge hostels and there may be lots of snoring we'll most likely employ the earplugs. This often renders normal beeping alarm clocks useless as you sleep through those (and piss off many of the others I imagine). Has anyone ever seen or heard of an alarm clock that vibrates or something else clever? My cell phone here vibrates and rings and wakes me up if I've got earplugs, but I've never heard of something else. Just my thoughts, let me know.

What about something like this? www.contactassist.com/vib2vibwat.htmlIt's a watch that has a vibrating setting. I actually have one (not this one) and it's really cool. I have to take a medication daily and always forget so the vibrating thing is a great reminder at work or in public that I have to take it without making a big deal!

I'm a sound sleeper, so I wonder if something like that would wake me up. I'd test it at home first for sure.
I think that if I had to get up for an early flight, that would probably be the time I would indulge in a private room, just so I would feel free to use a very loud alarm clock (and preferably also get a wakeup call). I can't remember what board it was, but someone posted about oversleeping for their early-morning flight home from Europe and how it ended up costing him several hundred dollars. So you can see that in some cases, it might be worth the extra dollars for a private room.

a few years back, preparing for a trip where i planned to wear earplugs when i slept at hostels, i bought one of those vibrating alarm watches. then i took it home and, as a test, set it to wake me at 5 the next morning. i totally slept through it! so, i took the watch back. fortunately, i've was able to order a "wake up" at the hostel in Amsterdam when i had an early morning flight home. otherwise, i always had back-up plans to ride later trains when i overslept. i needed those back-ups a few times!
