I was thinking, just for walking around the cities and such, that maybe a rainguard on my pack would be a good idea. In case anyone is not familiar with this, it is a piece of waterproof material that fits over your pack and pulls tight on the ends with a drawstring. What do you all think? I just want to deter people from slipping their hands into all the little pockets.

I don't think I'd bother with this - I had something similar and it was a pain in the butt everytime you needed something out of it, it gets tired fast.
All the zippers should have little locks on them anyway so you should be OK.

My zippers did not come with little locks, but I bought a couple. There are just so many zippers and then the day pack detaches just with clips so I'm a little paranoid I guess. Thanks for the feedback, though.

Are you talking about your big pack or your day pack? Your big pack, in particular, you won't be walking around with much. You'll be looking for some place quick to set that bad boy down. And your average 'thief' knows there is likely not much in that except dirty clothes anyway. If your day pack worries you, detach it and carry it on your front side so you can better keep and eye on it. 'Semi-valuable' things should be in that one anyway and it is easy to snap a lock on the one or two compartments that have anything worth stealing in them. And....anything really valuable should be in your money belt anyway. Sounds like you are really worried about theft....relax...it really is not as big a deal as some sites/books would have you believe. Oh....and that rainguard? You will soon enough come to realize what a pain in the butt that is!

Well, I might think twice about the rainguard. I can't imagine what a problem that would be though, since you can just pull it off. I am talking about my big pack (with daypack attached) that the rainguard would be for. My concern was the times between the airport and the train station, the train station to the hostel, etc., just walking in those busy areas. I am less concerned about my daypack when I wear it alone.
Oh, and, on a similar note, do I need to bring a combination lock for the lockers in hostels? Or do you rent it with the locker?

Yeah but if you can pull it off, they can slip their hands under. If they want to get in to something, they will - they are good. That's why everything always needs to be locked - both every zipper on your daypack as well as your main pack.
When you are squished in a metro car with a million other people pressed up against your pack, little locks are all that will keep them out.
Yep, bring a combination lock for hostels. Sometimes you won't need one but there will be times you will.
