This earthshattering issue seems to be taking up more thought than it's worth . I understand why a money belt or neck pouch is a good idea. But for stuff like your bottle of water, your guidebook, your map, and maybe a sweater, how do you carry it all around in the most discreet manner possible? I admit that on previous trips I have used plain plastic shopping bags, and/or sometimes just gone out not carrying anything (depending what I was doing that day). But I would like a more permanent, stylish solution that will attract as little attention from thieves as possible, even though I won't be putting much of value in it. I don't really like the idea of a daypack, because it is after all on your back and thus harder to keep people away. Any ideas? I've taken to scouring downtown Vancouver to see what people are using (mostly large purses or daypacks).

If not a day pack then I think a messenger bag would be my choice. They have a long strap so you can criss cross it over your self and be both more secure and it balances the weight somewhat, also have a handle on top to hold like a 'purse', can be quite stylish indeed. S shopping bag always has to be held in your hands more or less so I wouldn't like that option at all.

I bought a bag tonight that seems about perfect for what I want. It's black, very plain, and can easily hold a bottle of water and a guidebook and a few miscellaneous items. It could be worn with a dressy outfit should I choose to do so, and would also look fine with a casual outfit. It is very easy to clutch it to prevent thieves from opening it. Best of all, it was on clearance for $10 CAD .

Zellers at Oakridge.
I was there for some more mundane items, and decided to take a look and found it.
The brand name is Mossimo. I was just looking to see if I could see the same thing online, but I couldn't, although I found other Mossimo bags.

Mossimo is a pretty well known designer who sold his soul to Target! Their stores are full of Mossimo 'everything'. He does have nice things/designs though. Yea for clearance!

Zellers in Canada is fairly similar to Target in terms of being a low-moderate-end store.
