Welcome, Elliott!
I'm so jealous - not only are you studying in Scotland but travelling as well?? Damn!
Glad you finally starting posting - we love new members! It's kind of sad when we help plan trips then people leave.. we need new ones to fill in the gaps!
So what are you going to be studying in Edinburgh?

My first trip was when I was 19 and was to Australia! We started off in Melbourne and did the coast up to Cairns. I remember Melbourne being a lot like Vancouver, actually. Gorgeous country, I loved it. Spent 3 months travelling around then had to come back cause I was enrolled in school and all I wanted to do was go back to Oz! Kim

Hi to both of you (I say hi to you all the time, Ging ;D)
Well, I think I might take a turn!
I'm Kim and I'm the owner of these boards and guideforeurope.com, which I started after my 7 month, 17 country Europe trip in 2000. I can't take all the credit though, I do have A LOT of help from my moderators Ging (dustoffmom) and Patrick, as well as from our contributing members, Ray in Prague and CuriousToronto (Karen) in Paris.
I also live in Victoria, BC and like Kirsty, love it! Couldn't image living many other places - going to them for extended periods of time yes, living no.
My last trip was to Bali and Bangkok last Sept., so it's been far too long since I travelled.
I'm going to be 30 <I know I don't act it - thought I would get to that before Ging and Patrick try to take me down> in April, which feels weird. Funny how you get to this age when all you wanted to be was 16..
Anyway, I'm hoping to get back to Europe next year - but as the boyfriend has a few other places in mind, we'll see. Negotiations are under way.

I've emailed some members we haven't heard from much or from in a long time.
I've started this thread so that they or any people that just lurk can say hi and tell a bit about themselves.
Who's going to start?

What did you guys do or are going to do this weekend?
I went over to Saltspring, which is another island 30 min. by ferry from where I live for the day today. Beautiful, incredibly hot day. We had some lunch and went to a market there before heading home.
Tomorrow I'm going with a bunch of friends out for an all you can eat brunch at a gorgeous restaurant on the ocean - we are spoiling ourselves as it's way more than we usually pay for food! I can never seem to eat enough to make it worth while, which sucks!
What did you guys do?

Just read this article, thought you guys might want a quick read!
Woman with no baby given caesarean By Rajiv Maharaj 11Sep03
A woman was given a caesarean operation after mistakenly being diagnosed as pregnant, it was revealed last night.
The woman, 38, was suffering from severe high blood pressure. The overweight woman was brought to Royal Darwin Hospital suffering stomach pains.
Doctors, including two obstetrics specialists, performed the emergency procedure - only to discover there was no baby.
The woman was stitched up, kept in hospital for several days, and later discharged. Hospital superintendent Len Notaras last night confirmed the incident.
He said the woman told ambulance officers she was 38 weeks pregnant.
"Her build was such that it was hard to exclude that," he said.
The woman was admitted and examined by two obstetricians and the registrar. She was given an ultrasound scan to confirm whether she was pregnant.
The woman then went into cardiac arrest - that is she "clinically" died.
Dr Notaras said the woman was resuscitated and doctors decided to go ahead with the caesarean section to "save the baby".
He said the woman's high blood pressure gave the impression of a "pregnancy-related hypertensive" disorder.
"Because of this, the entirely appropriate decision was made not to wait but to go ahead with a life-saving caesarean operation," he said.
"The decision made was entirely appropriate. "Given the circumstances, and if they were to happen again, they'd make the same call."
Maternity Coalition, a Territory maternity care advocacy group, described the incident as "an unbelievable state of affairs".
The coalition said it proved that a midwifery maternity care program should be based in the community - not in the hospital.
"Midwives are the experts in determining when the normal becomes abnormal, as this case shows," said coalition president Virginia Nock.
This report appears on news.com.au.
