it seems really packed as an itinerary. you may not get a really good sense of the places you visit. most people on this board will say you need a minimum of 4-5 days for paris, london and rome. the rick steeves itinerary doesn't give you that. it seems a bit rushed. that itinerary would make me feel like i lived on a train.

hi
well in the time you have to work with i'd suggest 1 city per country (where you havne't already mentioned a city). Germany maybe 2 cities. i believe your there around oktobefest so make sure you book ahead if that is the case. never been so i can't recommend a city but i'm sure others will. italy in 4 days you can only do one city justice (less when you work in travel time). i'd recommend rome. its just such a historically signifcant city its fabulous. if not rome than florence. same goes for france. might as well do paris (i'm not a fan but many people are). as a point, you say italy and fance are at the top of your list, why have you allocated more time for germany then? maybe you want to knock a couple of days off germany and add one each to italy and france? or knock germany out altogether and you could do two ciites in each of italy and france.
how are you planning on traveling between places? there are a lot of cheap flight options which may be your best bet as none of your destinations are particularly close to one another (assuming you stick to capitals).

Eagle, i fully agree that image size can't be changed later. however, my point was, if you're taking a close up shot of something... say in a museum or say of friends at dinner... this is not something you will want to blow up to 8 x 10 or bigger (either way 2.0 blows up really nicely). most people tend to enlarge pics of scenerey... instances where you know you're not going to be making a poster out of it, it might be worth lowering the resolution to 3 or 4 mp. these can still be blown up quite large without taking up quite so much room. i've personally blown up a 2 mp to 1x1.2 m for a poster (presented at a conference) back ground which worked really well.
its part of my plans to upgrade my digital in the next year or so and when travelling i won't take 6 mp pics every where just cause i can. it'll end up costing me an arm and a leg in memory cards!

i read this quickly so i don't know if anyone mentionned this but another option is to not always use the camera at 6 mp! my understanding from friends that have 5 -6 mp cameras is you can put the setting lower. i personally have a 2 mp and it takes fabulous pics. you'll find in many instances 3 mp will be sufficient and this will take up a lot less space on the cards.

i have an old model of the nikon coolpix and i love it! it really takes fabulous pics despite being only 2 mp... the new ones fall into your price range so they might be worth a look.

well first of all, how long are you going for and how many megapixels is your camera? i consider myself fairly trigger happy and in 6 weeks took about 1000 photos. now my camera is old (2.1 mp) but i used way less than a gig. my friend thought about transfering pics to a cd at some point on our trip but in the end she didn't. i seem to remember it being relatively expensive (enough to make her hesitate) and we rarely saw anywhere that did it. but i can't say as we were always looking either.
also if you bring a tripod or whatever its something extra to carry. i'm not sure its necessarily worth it... but that's just me.

i use lithium AA batteries. they're made for digital cameras and last FOREVER. in 6 weeks and 1000 photos i went through 2 sets. i'd recommend those. the problem with recharchable AA batteries is they don't last very long so its annoying and not worth the hassel of hauling two sets off AA plus the charger and all the plugs that go along with it. definately buy batteries here tho. my grandfather (who was british) always used to stock up on batteries when he visited canada cause they were so much cheaper here.

Hey Auntie Jo!
while i am no camera expert and haven't researched it years... mine is three years old and was bought in japan! i do have nikon coolpix and i love it! if i were to buy another point and shoot it would be a nikon.
In terms of shopping in Toronto, I would suggest going to black's or another photography shop. maybe not to buy there, but at least to get information off the sales people and see which camera you like. my experience with future shop is that they are all a bunch of idiots who don't really know much about their products (my appologies to anyone on the board that works there but that has been my experience).

while i've done both, now that i have a digital, i wouldn't go back to a film camera... at least not for a point and shoot. i have a nikon and i very much like it. however everyone has their preferences. canon and minolta are also good brands. i was unimpressed with the quality of my friend's kodak brand camera tho. digital is nice cause you know right away that a picture is good or not. also you don't really need to limit how many pics you take. you don't need to develop them all at the end.
as for how many memory sticks, that depends on the resolution of your camera. i went for 6 weeks and took 1000 pics... i have no idea if this is excessive or not.... but you'll have to calculate for yourself how many pics you think you will take, the resolution of your camera and therefore how many memory cards you will need. i have a 2.1 megapixel camera and i took a 64 MBand a 512MB camera.

well you'd have to go to a store and look into it. but you're gonna want to spend about 200$ on the camera plus as much as 100$ for memory sticks... you can probably get something fairly basic for 200$ in the 3 or 4 Megapixel range.

plug adapters are very small. its not much of a hassel to lug. also, are the plugs the same in all the european countries you're going to?
usb cable i believe is standard.

many of the hostels i stayed in didn't allow you to hook up usbs to their computers... one guy i met on my travels would get them downloaded and burnt on to cds as he went. however the necessity of all this depends on how trigger happy you are, how big your memory card is, and what your camera resolution is on the whole flicker thing... i don't really use the software... but from what i understand from my friends that do is that it takes a while to upload pics... internet access in some parts of europe is quite expensive... just somethign to ocnsider.

i have a preference for nikons, but that's just me. everyone likes different things. i would recommend going with a camera brand for your digital and not something else (hp, kodak etc). also, a 7 megapixel camera is fairly unnecessary. 3 or 4 megs will be plenty for what you want to do (and these tend to be less expensive). also the higher the megs, the less pics will fit on a memory card. i have 2.2 meg nikon (which is old now but i love cause it takes amazing pics) and so a 512mg card was enough. but it all depends on how picture-happy you are and what resolution your pics are and how long you go for. hope this helps jules

my digital is basically point and shoot (and pretty small) but as a girl, not something i can put in a pocket as my pants tend to be reasonably fitted (and no plans for a tilley vest)... so around my neck isn't so bad i guess... i tend to be fairly concious of my things when i'm travelling having grown up in a fairly big city (mtl... don't worry i don't consider quebec city to be a big city)... i dunno.... aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh too much to think about!

DOM - does that mean you haul around a huge camera bag when you travel?
