I wasn't saying it was universal thoughout europe or all generations. i think opinions (and where they date from) vary greatly. i think animosity among people of our generation has come from the current administration. but in older genreation the second world war greatly defined them and their lives. my grandfather who faught in the RAF hated americans exactly because they joined the war so late. the netherlands as you say has a special relationship with canada, largely because we hosted their royal family during ww2. i also had a prof in university (quite young) who when she went to amsterdam was in a pub with her friend and an elderly gentlemen asked where they were from. when they found out they were canadian (and not american) he bought them a beer! so while i agree with you that animosity towards american with younger generations has nothing to do with ww2 you really can't underestimate how it shapped the generation that grew up during the war or fought in the war.

Liza - the thing about Canadians in Europe boils down A LOT (although not all) with World War 2. particularly in places like holland. and particularly with the older generation. Canadians joined immediately and helped out while the US waited until they were attacked.

theoretically yes. i don't know if its so much because of the temperature change, but definately its because of the pressure change. luggage compartment is not pressurized. on a similar note, if you want your perfume to smell the same when you get there, don't put it in your checked luggage. Julie

i've noticed a lot of posts about the necessity of pack locks... this may be a stupid question but do you use locks that require keys or combinations? thanks! Julie

Hey all! So i'm going to hit europe for about 5 weeks in september (starting aug 29th actually) basic itinerary is belgium, france, spain, france again, italy, austria, switzerland, and then uk (which that i'm good for been a bunch of times and have family to stay with). so i have a few questions... 1. will a sheet be warm enough for hostels in all these locations or will i freeze without a sleeping bag? 2. should i pack as if i was going in the summer (which is what most of these posts seem to be about)? shorts and t-shirts or more pants? 3. have you heard of the hotel chain formule 1? it seems cheap and clean (in some countries cheaper than a hostel)? are they any good or pretty gross? 4. i have a top-loading pack... how can i lock it? any tips would be helpful! thanks! Julie

as for the question about the pucks and frizzy hair... they have about 8 different kinds all for different types of hair so they probably have one for curly hair good luck with that!

The lush solid shampoo is fabulous! i used it on my last trip to the UK... i also have the solid conditionner... which while not as fabulous as the shampoo still works well and is very necessary for my fine static-y hair. and bonus - can't leak!
