I have worked for charities involved in fund raising. If you want more detailed help with something specific PM me and I'll try and help out. The problem you may find there is a lot of those posts are voluntary and only basic expenses are paid. As far as route is concern you have such a large time frame I don't think that matters too much the UK and Ireland are not than big :-) . I guess if you posted some of your interests it may help people to suggest suitable cities and places. London is always more expensive than anywhere else in the country and generally the South East is also expensive. The minimum wage in the UK is £5.80 (ish) if you are over 21, it is lower if you are younger. You will be competing for jobs with an influx of Eastern European workers. Most of those workers start off by signing up with agencies. Be warned - I have worked for these agencies in factories and they can be unreliable with the hours they offer. There has also been reports of dodgy agencies offering below minimum wage - this is illegal and don't accept it. If I was you I would try to find work on your own without an agency. Try this site www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk . This is the official site for job seekers in the UK. You can search for jobs nationally. Good luck Any questions you have even when you get to the UK PM me and I'll try to help.

megabus, megabus, megabus - they are coming out as the cheapest for travel in the UK at the moment. They do bus and train tickets. My mam just travelled Carlisle to Inverness (7hr journey) for £14 and that included a booking fee. The closest national express ticket was £40. Plus I agree with PONR you can look at booking train tickets a LONG way in advance to get some great savings and avoid travel at peak times.

You could also try www.megabus.com sorry I haven't time to check the route for you right now (they definatly go London - Glasgow) but they do cheaper bus AND train tickets than national express and british rail.

Yeah that's the one i'm talking about. I really enjoyed it but I agree there was not enough time to really explore. I must admit I am a bit ignorant to the different states in America outside the major cities so it was a nice, gentle introduction.
And so cool to do it in a black taxi!

My dad often drives UK to Bulgaria (I say often about 5 times in 2yrs). However he just drives to get there rather than sight seeing if you want any more advice about routes and roads I can e-mail him your questions. However he normally goes Netherlands, Germany then drops now goes through Romania and into Bulgaria so doesn't touch france, spain or italy. PM to let me know any specifics.

This is going to make me sound silly. Do Americans do much internal travelling? America is such a huge place to us small islanders. I always think of it as just like the UK different areas speak slightly different and southerns are more grumpy than northerners ;-) but otherwise we are all pretty much the same. However I know I'm wrong and every state and county has it own little oddities, sterotypes and querks. There has just been a seris on our tv touring America. Some of the less obvious (well to me) places. Some of the places were stunning - Montana! Made me want to plan an american tour but where would you start there are such huge distances between everywhere. I don't really have an interest in New York or California (the 2 extremes ) but definately something to think about. My friend and his new wife were gonna do the whole Harley Davidson road trip thing as there honeymoon but money stopped it. I think this is a future venture.

My advice is always to go native, shop at local shops and markets even for things like sandwiches and drinks. That way you do not get the tourist marked up prices. Plus you may try something different that you quite enjoy. Often large supermarkets have cafes in them that offer cheap snacks and meals.
Don't wait until you are hungry to decide what you want. You will always make impulsive often more expenisve buys.

What a great thing to do with your son!
To be honest I would just try to hit two places in 7 days. Otherwise your memory of the trip maybe the rushing to catch trains. If your son is a muscian you will want to be in situ and not on a train on some nights to catch some gigs or live music. If it was me I would eurostar to Paris then train to Barcelona (to get that - yes we are travelling cross countries - feeling). I would fly back to the UK so you have maximise your time in Barcelona. Just my opinion. happy travelling!

Is it 'natural wonders' that interest you specifically or more adventure holiday type things?

OK if you are excluding Rome, Prague, Paris, UK and Ireland I would have 2 suggestions
1. Do a Scandanavian countries tour if they interest you. They are reputably very expensive so you would have to consider your budget with this option.
2. Do an eastern European tour. So Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia ect This would be a cheaper option as cost of living is cheaper here and easier transport links to Germany.
I am not sure how these options fit into your rail travel price. Others may be able to advice further on that. Remember though 22 days is not a lot of time so I think you would be better sticking to one area than jumping about too much. Gives you an excuse to come back and do the parts you have missed.

Hey there, If you end up travelling in the UK do not just jump on a train unless you are only going on a short journey. You will end up paying much more for your tickets. Do try and book your ticket at least a couple of days in advance. Sorry I don't know a lot about rail passes but I know others on this site do.

Don't know if this will effect anyone here. But XL airlines have gone bust stranding thousands abroad and cancelling many people's reservations . XL go by many different names so if you have any flights booked to fly I would double check them. Luckily for the people on this site most of their flights are package holidays to Med resorts which I don't think is the main destination of this board's users, but better to check than be sorry later. Another victim of rising fuel costs and a nail in the coffin for affordable travel .

Hi there everyone My brother has a problem. He needs to get from Bulgaria to the UK by the 18th of Sept. So I need the cheapest possible method of doing that and some sites to help me along the way. I'm guessing bus is the way to go but some one point me where to go please. I have tried some flight searches and all are quite expensive (we live in the North of England so flights to London are no good). Please help somebody!!!
Thanks in advance Shelley x
