I have to agree with Eagle the Greek Islands will be VERY quiet because not only have the tourists left and businesses closed but most people who live there in summer go 'home' in the winter.
I think your best bet to jump into Africa will come through Spain. I have seen some good deals around at the minute.

Lonely Planet just did a programme about Budapest I haven't got the exact details but they were caving. It looked well cool if you're into that sort of thing. They also travelled to an airfield 30mins from budapest and went up in a glider flying over the city. It cost £20 (GBP) for about 20 mins. Sorry it's a bit vague I'll scout about for more details.

Firstly congratulations on the big day!
Just a thought - have you considered dropping Amsterdam altogether and just doing an italian tour. I just think it would be more relaxing. Just my opinion.

What about Bulgaria's Black Sea Coast. It's Eastern Europe with the warmer weather. Maybe Varna - I'm a fan. It's cheap as chips to visit so for a few days you would struggle to spend a couple of hundred pounds. Only problem is most of the flights are booked up with package deals so getting flights can be an arse.
Or if you don't fancy that what about Barcelona. I've never been but it's got bucketfuls of interesting sights and culture. It is a popular backpackers destination so I'm sure there will be opportunity to meet people. And the sun should be shining! Only thing I don't know is what prices are like at the minute.
If I was you although you would feel safer in Krakow and ther is nothing wrong with visiting Krakow I would really think about visiting somewhere else. Take the plunge it will be more rewarding conquring a new city on your first solo trip. Just my opinion.
This post probably rambled a bit maybe someone else has some thing more concrete.

Generally trainers (sports type shoes) are not allowed in clubs. I think just regular shoes would be fine. I think some places are stricter than others.

I have never been so this is just what I've heard about Croatia/ Belgrade.
A few points and questions -
Where are you travelling from? It's just I was wondering if you're going to be affected with jet lag because you are going to lose some of your short time in Zagreb and then you are whizzing off to Dubrovnik.
You say your only real travel options are ... Do you mean only options to hit the 3 places you have named or your only options to visit Croatia? Sorry If I'm being dim!!
I researched Croatia a year or so ago and internal flights between Zagreb were very cheap and quick compared to train travel. I found some as low as £20.
Split is close to Dubrovnik and worth a visit.
A bit random sorry but maybe someone else has something more useful.

I wanted to grab a quick get away some where this summer to give jr his flying wings. My spec to my OH was not too hot and not too far away so a 4hr plane journey and 40 degree heat is what he booked I have just spent a week in Side on the med coast of Turkey. I don't know whether Turkey is considered Europe given as only about 8% of the country is officially in Europe but they enter the Eurovision Song contest so that is good enough for me to include them on this site. The town it's self is tourist central! But it has many interesting features. This was apparantly the place where Mark Antony proposed to Cleopatra and the place is littered with roman ruins and monuments. the Apollo Temple on the harbour is especially impressive. Side is suppose to be the breeding ground for Sea Turtles but I have my doubts turtles would pick such a busy area. But it gives and excuse to those selling turtle magnets, badges, t-shirts, mugs, towels ... Others in my hotel did see dolphins on a boat trip. We also visited Manavagat which is the city that 'accompanies' Side and pleasant friendly city but we found no real places of interest. We did travel to the heavily advertised Manavagat Waterfalls. Once past armed guards, metal detectors, bag searches and an entrance fee (I kid you not!) we were greeted not with the falls of Victoria proportions as we expected but a slightly damp squib 6ft high trickle. I may be spoiled living in the British Lake District and having many waterfalls littered about the place but I wasn't impressed. We travelled always by Dolmus (local minibus service). They are very cheap and run regularly although Dolmus translates as Crammed so expect to stand often. They have no set timetable and no real set bus stops. You can flag them down just about anywhere on the streets. They are the only way to travel around town in Turkey. A 10 lira taxi journey could be done for 1 lira in the dolmus. For anyone thinking of traveling across country in Turkey then buses are definatly your best option the train service is old and unreliable. The prices in TUrkey have jumped so much in the last few years. I have put this down to the Turks accepting the euro in the resorts. Many goods and even menus are priced in euros. Where something used to be 1 Lira (2.3 to the £) they are now priced at 1Euro a big jump. My OH loves the haggling in the bazaars so he got some good bargains. It is expected and part of the fun ;D. Although the 'in your face' style of the sellers can become to much for me. Remember these prices are in tourist central so other parts of Turkey may be different. My son got his flying wings and even coped with a 3hr delay at 3am on the return trip. I was panicing about taking him but we were very sencible with the heat. It was very hot even 29 degrees at night time He wore his UV wetsuit in the pool and drank lots of fluids. He was a little angel and the turks are so friendly with children. People stopped to talk to him, gave up seats on buses for us and general were very accomodating. He is an official GFE member now!!!

Enjoy yourself!!! Sometimes you have put so much into planning a trip you forget to relax.
If something seems to good to be true it probably is. Watch out for scams and con artists if you are in any doubt - walk away.
I hope you have a great time :-)

Rome because I never got to see everything I wanted to. I did the tourist rush around of sights but I never had chance to just chill out and soak up the atmosphere.

Yeah, XL Cheese Crisps are pretty good, but there's nothing like a pint and a packet of C&O! Crisp war!!! In my town we have a pickled egg inside a packet of XL to accompany our pint - classy or what!!!!
