In May, in Scotland I would recommend planning your equipment to survive four seasons in one day. Although it can be warm ... Ish depending where you are coming from it can also be pretty rotten too. Plan for wind and rain and hopefully you'll get a little sunshine as well. Happy planning sorry I couldn't be more help on specific gear.

Hi I'm hoping to travel from Amsterdam to Berlin by train in spring 2015. From what I understand it is a 6hr journey so as I'm travelling with a 7yr old I wanted to break the journey up. We are deliberately going by train and not flying as my son wants to do a bit of train travel in Europe. Don't know where he gets that from :-) Has anyone got any suggestions for somewhere to stop off to break up the journey. I'm open to anything interesting. Thanks C

Hey there I can't offer much advice on Ireland as it's a tragedy that I've never been there. Given the choice of Birmingham or London and Aberdeen or Sterling I would plump for London and Stirling. I think the places you have suggested sound fine. Although 2 days in London is just scratching the surface and you will have to prioritise what you want to see. If you have spare days I would add some onto London. I'm not sure about travel in Ireland but I would suggest starting in the south and working North so London - Wales - Liverpool - Glasgow - Sterling - Edinburgh then fly out to Ireland. As suggested the trains are quicker but more expensive however advance tickets can be bought at a fraction of the cost of "on the day" tickets. I would suggest looking at www.megabus.com as this offers just about the cheapest tickets around on the trains and buses. Bus travel is ok but they stop at every garden gate so are slower. Cheap internal flights are available but if you go with the above route your longest journey would be Liverpool to Scotland so I don't know if it would be worth it but even so you could compare prices at ryanair, Jet2 or easyjet. May be handy if you decide to go straight from London to Scotland. In terms of accomodation your most expensive places will be London and Edinburgh but all your locations are tourist destinations so you should have a wide choice of budget hostels. If you want suggestions for other places which you could visit I would suggest posting some of your interests (nightlife, culture, outdoorsy stuff) which will help people to suggest places. My personal favorites not on your list would be York, Bath, Lake District, Highlands but it all depends on what your interests are.

Just to give you a UK update on this.
Swine flu has been getting A LOT of coverage within the media. We have had around 18 cases confirmed but most of those have been people coming back from Mexico. Holidays and flights to Mexico have been cancelled. However the cases do not seem to be as serious as the ones in Mexico. None have proved fatal and most people have been back on their feet within a few days.
I can't help wondering if this has been wiped up by the media to be more serious than it really is. Afterall people died every year in every country from different types of flu. Obviously caution is sensible especially regarding your insurance but I wouldn't cancel your plans.
I think cases have been confirmed in Italy as well but I don't know the details.

As far as London goes there are no holidays in the time you are away. There is a bank holiday at the end of August but you will have left by then. The schools are off during July and August so it may make things busier. Generally most things are open on Sundays but they may close early or open later so it is best to check first.

For the time of year that you are thinking of travelling I would think about booking some of the accomodation in advance because the main cities will get very busy and you may struggle to find a cheap bed or may have to compromise on location. I think Will's plan looks a good way of doing things I would be inclined to go Eastern europe but this is just my personal choice Sofia, Budapest, Prague, Krakow, Dubrovnik, Bratislava but you could also use the extra time to do an Italian tour or a Greek island tour (but you are travelling at peak tourist season so things could be hectic in Greece). What are your interests - culture, nightlife, outdoors? That may give people an idea of places to suggest.

Builder's Breakfast Very disappointing . Guess the great British public can't get enough of eggs, bacon, beans and toast. They were the worse in my opinion. Still the person who suggested them has won £50,000 and a 1% royality payment on all sales so good luck to her. Secret squirrel signing out

I found the link on the money saving expert Martin Lewis's website. I'll try again to get the link that works. It's a handy website to bookmark anyway he has lots of tips for cheap flights and sometimes freebie flights. This is a UK based website so some of it won't be relavent to those based in other places. I'll have another go for a link .

Hi everyone I've just discovered this "secret" link on the lastminute.com website. It lists hotels that will take bookings at discounted prices. The hotels are trying to fill their rooms. This is not just on European hotels but worldwide. The hotels are not hostels so are more expensive than your usual backpackers hotel but with a good discount offered it may mean you can afford to have a bit of luxery for a few nights. Just remember to order your search based on price or stars. www.lastminute.com/site/travel/hotels/deals/top-secret.html?intcmp=main_hp_gotravel_2_topsecret&AID=10296531&PID=1658918The only catch is that they do not want to tell people that have already booked their hotel rooms that you can now get the same room at 50% off so they keep the name of the hotel a secret until after you have confirmed the booking. A little trick though is to copy and paste the hotel info into a search engine and see which hotel it throws up because lastminute.com often use the exact wording from the hotel's own website. Don't know if this will help anyone but a sneaky trick!!! ;D

Can you not just do a bank transfer from your account straight into the account of the owners of the apartment. Get his sort code and account number and get your bank to send it across.
Or can you set up a paypal account and transfer it to him this way (there are small commission fees for this).
I have sent money via western union before and it can get quite pricey.
I'm just guessing here so I don't know if this helps you.
