The Maiden Voyage 70L looks like a good pack. The most important thing is to make sure it fits your torso, so get thee to the store and try it on!

Welcome to the boards! There are many threads here discussing backpack sizes. Generally, Eagle Creek are the 'preferred' brand around here. They may be ugly, as you say, but damn do they hold up well. To really help you out though, we need to know your gender and size. You want a backpack properly fitted for your torso or else it will start to weigh down on you. Where are you? Do you have someplace you can go to try these on before you purchase one? That's your best bet.

I've tried those. The only good ones are the ones that require a machine to suck the air out. Those ones that you roll up to push air out always pop on me. I gave up on those things.

We all babble here, you're no different. ;D If you need a pillow on that first night, roll some clothes up into a shirt. Instant temp pillow.

Eagle Creek bags seem t obe the preferred bag around here. I have a Continental Journey myself, though that model has been discontinued. Whichever kind of backpack you get, make sure you try it on in the store and make sure it's properly fitted to your torso length! If you search around the 'Packing' forum you'll find plenty on this subject, I'm just to lazy to do it right now. ;D

That's a tough one Liz. You may be fine if you get a properly fitted backpack and distribute the weight properly, but you'd have to check with a doctor.

Never thought I'd say this, but that sounds like to little. Get rid of a jacket and add another T-Shirt and long sleeved shirt. Then it sounds right to me, but I'm a guy, and and one pair of shorts and 2 t-shirts are the only thing I take on weekend trips... ;D

lizladd, when you are logged in, on the top of the screen click 'Profiles' and you can change information there. KAT2000, That looks like a good weekend pack, but I don't think it'll do for a longer trip.

There are many brands of backpacks available, check this link www.guideforeurope.com/backpacks.htmlfor GFEs guide to backpacks. General consensus (though their are many other kinds) is that the Eagle Creek Continental series is a great bag to travel with. It's what I've got, and it hasn't let me down yet!

It's the height of tourist season, so yes it's going to be hard finding accomodations. You MIGHT be able to find some in out of the way hostels, but a better bet is to start calling places NOW (it's morning in Dublin now, right?). Otherwise, you'll be spending time sleeping in a station or an expensive hotel room. When you do get to Paris, it's be smart to call ahead to your next location for reservations. It'd still be hard, but you'll beat the others that'll look when they get there. Again, if you need any more help, post away! We're always here!

Ok, sudden images of packing with my ex-wife... Are you sure your not really my ex-wife? That's a LOT of clothes for 10 days. A suitcase will be a pain in the ass (suitcases are a pain in the ass on road trips, let alone backpacking Europe), I suggest a backpack. My 'formula' is - 1 shirt/tanktop for every day
- 1 shorts/pants for every 2 days (even better are the pants that you can zipper the legs off)
- 1 pair of socks/underwear for every day
- 1 swimsuit
- 2 pairs of sneakers
- 1 pair cheap flip-flops (if they break, you can buy another cheap pair)
- 1 extra set of clothes (shirt/shorts/underwear/socks)
This is what I use to figure out what I need whenever I travel, but I never bring 'going out' clothes. I'm not much for 'going out' unless there's a barstool and beer or a movie screen (even better with both! ;D). If you don't plan on doing laundry, you can pack like this - 10 shirt/tanktop
- 5 shorts/pants
- 10 pairs of socks/underwear
- 1 swimsuit
- 2 pairs of sneakers
- 1 pair cheap flip-flops (if they break, you can buy another cheap pair)
- 1 extra set of clothes (shirt/shorts/underwear/socks)
- 2 nice outfits (a dress and/or a dress shirt/pants combo) (depending on how often you plan on going out and getting dressed up, how much $$$ will you have?)
- 1 nice pair of shoes, but I'd recommend NOT bring heels
If you plan on doing laundry, you can cut that in half. Good god, that's the bear essentials?!? Whew, thank god men don't like variety! ;D

I've got the Continental Journey from Eagle Creek, and during the whole "who's moving where" fiasco with my family, I pretty much lived out of it for a month with no problems, with PLENTY of room to spare. I can fit nearly every single piece of clothing in my bag (I've tried; I was bored), with the exception of a few pairs of shirts and shorts. I live in SoFla though, so the extent of my "winter clothing" was only a heavy coat.

Laptop?

Ooooohhhh ya general consensus is to not bring a laptop. As you said, it's extra weight, you'll be paranoid about it the entire time, and you have to bring a heavy voltage converter so you don't blow it out. Even with a light notebook, say 3.5 lbs, add the converter and whatnot and it's an easy 8 lbs extra or so. There are plenty of Internet Cafe's to hit for e-mail and whatnot. And really, he'd be sitting on a train playing games instead of watching the countryside go by with you?!? The cad! ;D

I've apparently got a southern accent, but I never hear it. I do pick up accents though rapidly at work (even moreso now that I'm in an international mall!). My new co-workers are already ragging on me about it, but I'll have the last laugh when the sales come in for the month! ;D
