Handy Language Printout

Ok, so there's been MUCH talk about something like this, so let's start, eh?
We all know that Europe is home to many (manymanymanymany) languages. This little project is to compile a simple printout of the most common (and useful) phrases in various languages.
First, we need a list of what to put in it...anyone? I'll keep the post right below this one updated with the phrases as we get them. I won't be much help with ANY of the translations (unless you count Geek...I can speak Geek REALLY well ;D), but I can keep this thing organized. Ready all?

as a point, the question should be, where is the nearest toilet? people in europe look at you VERY strangely when you ask for a bathroom in a public place. it is strictly in someone's house.

Thanks Cat for the diabetic clarification. That seems to me to be the advantage of online folks helping. Most any 'basic' question or phrase will likely be covered in any guidebook. But if I am diabetic (not) or asthmatic (yes) there might be specific questions/statements relating to myself that will not be covered in a general phrase book. It's those 'personal' questions that can be translated that is the real advantage we Americans have here with those of you blessed with multiple languages!

my Dad was asthmatic. on our '99 trip to Spain, he neglected to bring one of his medicines along and needed it in Madrid. he had no trouble walking into a pharmacy and buying a bottle w/o a prescription. he also was surprised at paying pennies on the dollar, compared to here at home.

From what I recall, didn't some start a Thread on this topic a few months ago? I'd have to give some thought on what phrases would be useful for me. Just curious, how many languages were you intending to list? Also, would it be worthwhile to provide tips on pronunciation for some of the more unusual words?

Have to go for dinner now, but I'll stop back later and list some Italian phrases.

Eagle, a while ago we were talking about starting a thread like this. This might be what you had in mind. We do have to think about pronounciation, but I guess that, because it is in writing, people can also show the card when they are on the road.

As for translations: I can offer Dutch translations for every sentence here, but thought it better to wait for a bit untill we have this thing more outlined.

Are we going to translate the sentences already of should we hold off for a bit? It might be an idea to compile a list of people who can offer translations. If Doug was willing to e-mail a more definitive list with phrases to those people he could easily post it in this thread. It would keep it more organised.

There you go, some of the subtleties of the sentences got lost in translation, but with this set you should be able to get around. I also placed some words between brackets, as they are quite difficult to pronounce in Dutch and not really neccessairy to convey the meaning of the sentence.
Next stage: pronounciation!

PS: I'll be gone from Nov. 3rd through Nov 26 (holiday in South Africa, yay!) I won't be online too much then, so don't count on a addition then.

I hope this is ok, i did everything in the polite form, i substited the n with the tilde on top with a nio since that's basically the sound you make when you say it.
I tried to put the most general ways of saying things, living in miami people speak spanish in tons of different ways cuz of the variety of cultures.
