I have seen a few times on the responses that many people don't enjoy Brussel. The comments are from its ugly to a far place to stay. It is on my list of one place to go out of about 17 cities. Could anyone tell me why really it is not so great, and if so which cities in near prox. that would be better to spend the time. Thanks

Kim can tell you all about the town of Bruges ;D much nicer. I'm sure many would take antwerp over brussels as well.

page 3 of the 'Updates from travelers' section on the board has my report from Brussells.....next to Warsaw my very least favorite city I have been in. It's expensive, snobbish, filthy, spread out and horrid public transportation system, the only place I was reguarly/daily/almost every time shortchanged, and at the end of the day there is really not all that much to see and do there. Antwerp and Brugge offer so much more.
Can't help it.....I detested Brussells!

Yeah, not one of my favorites either. Didn't find much to do and it was just another big city.
LOVE Bruges though. Definately recommend it over Brussels. Ghent is also very nice.
It's pretty much unanimous (I think!) on these boards that as far a beauty, personality and originality - Bruges wins hands down!

Thank you guys. Your so quick and helpful. There is more to learn here about europe than in any guide book. This is the real practical side.

>>>>>>There is more to learn here about europe than in any guide book. This is the real practical side. <<<<<
Thanks! But always bear in mind.....nothing beats a guide book you trust in hand...and everything posted here is personal opinion. ;D It's all practical as it related to our individual trips...and we will surely tell you our opinion....but while I hated Brussels for example, and will gladly detail why 'I' feel that way...you may adore it! Gather all the info you can, read, research and make your own decisions. Who knows, you might come back and be the loud dissenting voice to my Brussels bashing! ;D
It's a research tool.....one among many you can use. You will find, often, we 'regulars' debating continually.....I think this is great, Kim does not....Nitsansh thinks best to route this way, David disagrees....to you it's all just information. Everyone travels their own way, likes different things, wants to linger or stay moving....Patrick is likely the most laid back here and I tend to listen to his thoughts.....what I am trying to say is the thing that will most insure the sucess of your journey is good research/information beforehand and taking advice that helps and tossing the rest. And ask away, by now you surely know we all have an opinion and love to champion it! ;D

I think debating is fine.. each person states their point and that is it.
What I don't like is people going back and forth arguing when it's obvious no one is going to give - not the point of these boards, that's just silly.

No it's OK.. I just want to be clear that everyone knows that actually I don't mind debating like you put. It's when it goes too far that it gets pointless.

;D ;D HA! Just reread this thread and ...oops! What I meant was I think this 'place' is great, Kim does not....not that I think I think the debate is great, Kim does not. Left out an important qualifier there! Sorry Kim...never meant to imply you did not like debate. Sheesh....feeling foolish now g

I think its because it looks really dull when passing it by train, all you see are factories and buildings.
Plus, like Bologna for instance, being a big city, one has to find the historical or beautiful parts

Are you referring to Brussels here:
>>>>>I think its because it looks really dull when passing it by train, all you see are factories and buildings.<<<<<<<
I stayed there for 3 days, sadly.....to me it looked, and was, just as dull right in the heart of the city. ;D

But what about the Giant Atom!!! ;D
I think the general concensus here is that your time would best be spent elsewhere.

Patrick! The Giant Atom? Oh puhlese! Is there a bigger 'tourist trap' in all of Belgium....in all of Europe for that matter!
I just know you were kidding!
