Welcome to the group, Jessica! i hope that some of your questions will be answered here. my Europe travel planning has gone easier since i found this place on the web! don't go to Church much on Sundays anymore. this might be a little misleading. i still go to early Thursday morning Bible Studies at the Church campus. it's lead by our former interim senior minister. it's the Sunday worship that i've been missing. sometimes, we go to another local Presbyterian Church for Sunday worship. - d

Hi, Jess!
does Médecins Sans Frontières do Psychological treatments? i had no idea!
well, i knew they sprung from the volunteers who went to Eastern Nigeria to help Biafran refugees in the civil war there, late 60's.
i've read that malnutrition was the biggest problem there: the Nigerian blockade kept food, as well as medicine, out of Biafra.
Dr. Bernard Kouchner, one of those who was in Biafra with the Red Cross - a founder of MSF, is now the French Foreign Minister.
btw, it's noteworthy that Kouchner now has that job: he's a leftist, formerly a French Communist - yet France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, is center-right. [also, Kouchner openly supported Ségolène Royal for president]
Sarko must be fairly self confident to accept as foreign minister a man who opposed his run for president!

This is sort of related, but it reminds me of a recent book and movie I've enjoyed.
Half a Yellow Sun is a novel about the civil war in Nigeria (when Biafra tried to split off). It's excellent! (If you are worried that it will have an un-nuanced treatment of Westerners, that's not the case at all.)
Last week, I saw the movie "Guelwaar", by the African director Sembene, who lived in France for some time. It's set in the director's home country of Senegal, with the underlying subtext of Christian/Muslim tensions. About half the movie is in French, and half in the Senegalese language.
I've known lots of people who've gone to Africa - maybe sometime I'll feel comfortable doing so myself.
