My wife and I are spending a few nights in Edinburgh and we would like to stay in the same room, so single sex room hostels are out. Any suggestions for a hostel that is close to the Royal Mile?
Thanks!

all i know is i've heard horror stories about Scottish hostels! cant say first hand... but friends stayed in two that were filthy, and haven seen reports online saying the same thing... i'm sure it doesnt go for all of them. just be careful choosing!

I've been looking for a good one myself in Edinburgh.
Kim, Have you stayed at the St. Christopher's there? I thought St. Chris hostels were major party places.
I've been thinking of staying at one of the YHA's but neither of them are downtown and I'd prefer to be as close as I can get.

Nope, never stayed there. I've heard that about the original St. Chris's in London but not really about the Edinburgh one.
Most of the independent hostels in Scotland and the UK have bars so people tend to stay in there if they want to party. It's always a toss up when you are staying in a dorm though, depends on who you share with. If it's with considerate people, it doesn't matter. If you get some rude people who come in loud and drunk, it doesn't matter if the hostel is considered a party place or not, it's still annoying, you know?
I found the YHA's to be annoying as well though as the ones we stayed at tended to have school groups running down the halls at all hours of the night, yelling etc. In the morning, we even found blown up condoms attached to the door - nice!
It's always a gamble!

I can't provide any helpful info, but it's interesting how this hostel has booked up already! Maybe it's a group that has rented it out.

It is indeed interesting, but not surprising. Things seem to be filling up earlier than I ever expected. I've been caught on a few occasions.
*sigh*

The Whitby YHA is also booked for the time I wanted to visit. The other Hostel in Whitby hasn't answered any of my e-mails. One whole leg of my trip is falling apart!

We will be staying in Edinburgh in less than a month, so I can tell you how our stay is?? We ended up choosing the Budget Backpacker Hostel in Edinburgh because it was near the Grassmarket and the Castle. (It also allowed mixed rooms unlike Castle Rock which works better for my wife and I.) But if you can wait a month, I can tell you if we made a good or bad decision.

Thanks Paco, but I'm a bit nervous about waiting a month. My first choice was available as of last week, I'm worried my second choice will also fill up.
Thanks for the offer though!
BTW...I'd love to hear what you thought of Edinburgh, what you loved, hate and would recommend for me to check out. ;D

Have you checked out the reviews, Libby? It usually gets good ones. I think it's a pretty social hostel. www.guideforeurope.com/castlerockreviews.htmlI would look into it, as well as the 2 others I mentioned above. All 3 are well known, reputable hostels. Kim

It's a very social hostel and, to be honest, I'd like to avoid that. I'll be coming off a 7 day tour at that point and being alone and having some quiet is just what I'm looking for.

What do you think about a bed and breakfast? I think will you find it hard finding a really quiet hostel in Edinburgh as most people are looking for social, so they aim them at that, you know?
What's your price range?

I'm staying at a Bed and Breakfast when I first get to Edinburgh for the two nights before I leave on the tour. It's the 4 nights I'll be there after the tour ends that I'm trying to reserve.
I thought about B&B's but that's out now that I have to stay at a B&B in Whitby. At least in Edinburgh I have options other than one hostel.
I think I'm going to go with the YHA in Brunstfield. It's gotten great reviews and the price is certainly right. It's not in the downtown core of the city, but it's on a bus route and close to a grocery store.
